Lombardy, one of the largest regions located in north-central Italy, tends to have a cool continental climate. It counts with 20 DOCs, 5 DOCGs, 13 IGT designations and is the only Italian wine region to showcase Nebbiolo wines together with Piedmont. It is primarily known for its sparkling whites, Oltrepo-Pavese but more than anything outstanding Franciacorta produced in the traditional method of Champagne. Another wine feature that is worth to highlight bears in unexpected and unique red Valtellina made of Chiavennasca, the local name for an Alpine Nebbiolo grape grown at high altitude.
